Heat or Ice: When should you use which?

Wondering why you leave swollen and dehydrated after hot yoga but shivering and tense after an ice

bath? Wondering if you should end your workout session in the sauna or grab a cold one (an ice pack

that is) to end your time at the gym?

Both heat and ice decrease pain and muscle spasm/soreness. However, they have opposite effects when it comes to blood flow, inflammation and swelling. Heat will increase these factors whereas ice will decrease them. So when should you use which if you’re looking to decrease pain?

Have a seat in the sauna if you are feeling sore or tight after a workout to promote blood flow to tired muscles and keep the tissue loose. The increased blood flow will deliver the nutrients and oxygen muscles need after a workout. Continuing to move while sore is the other best thing to do to relieve soreness!

On the other hand, use ice to decrease the flow of fluid to already swollen muscles or joints. Again, both heat and ice decrease pain and muscle soreness. It depends on what other symptoms are present that you can find what will work best for you. Use your preferred modality for 10 – 15 minutes for the best effects as needed.

Member of the Month – Kaitlyn Best

Congratulations to FFC Lincoln Park’s June member of the month, Kaitlyn! Kaitlyn answered a few questions for us about being a member at FFC:

  1. What does membership at FFC mean to you?

For me, being a member at FFC means so much more than a good workout; membership at FFC means a commitment to my overall well-being. It gives me an upbeat attitude, a sharp mind, more self-assurance, restful sleep, and a sense of accomplishment. Going to FFC gives me a purpose throughout my day, holds me accountable to my goals, and keeps me on track to form healthy habits.

  1. When I am at FFC you will find me…

When at FFC you might find me trying out one of the various group classes, crying in the steam room, or (most likely) hanging out in the lobby, distracting the sales team while working up the motivation to get started.

  1. I work out to…

I workout mainly to work off all the chicken sammies I eat at work, but also to clear my mind, raise my endorphins, keep my mental health in check, and prepare for hot girl summer!

Join us as we host Dr. Kevin Koo of the Advocate Medical Group for a complimentary workshop titled Staying Mentally Fit During Challenging Times on Tuesday, June 21 from 6 – 8 PM.  During the presentation Dr. Koo will discuss that our minds are our most valuable resource, yet we take very little time to take care of them. We understand the importance of being healthy, yet many of us prioritize our physical health over our mental state. We are more concerned with how we look rather than how our mind feels. Our mental and emotional health affects every aspect of our daily life, whether we realize it or not.
